The narrow historic streets and alleys of Liwan leave the neighborhood short of public space. The museum's sunken plaza works on a daily "tidal" rhythm: open to ticketed guests while the museum is running, and returned to the public once it closes at night.
By sharing its ground between institution and street, the museum reorganizes everyday activity and gives the dense old town a generous new room for gathering.
